What will counselling be like and what makes it work?

Your decision to have some counselling is a brave step

We tend to struggle with our feelings and overwhelming experiences alone. Sharing them with someone who will support and not judge you can be extremely liberating. Clients often tell me ‘Once I shared things with you, a weight lifted.’

We build a relationship based on trust and mutual respect.

Then it feels safe to ask questions and explore issues we usually avoid. This freedom and confidence to be open lies at the heart of the work we will do together.

We suppress painful feelings because they are physically uncomfortable too. So at first sharing may feel difficult but with a little practice, things get easier and clients often tell me they feel more ‘relaxed’ once they've opened up a bit.

Those who love and care about you the most will not necessarily be best able to facilitate the deep level of exploration you need. They may want to fix things because seeing your distresss is too upsetting for them.

Counselling provides the  environment, time and resources for you to learn how to regulate your emotions and transform chaotic or rigid thinking into more flexible ways of being.

What does this mean?

We all benefit from talking to someone like a trusted friend, a family member or colleague who listens and encourages us from time to time.

But talking about our concerns and worries with a counsellor helps us better understand ourselves on a deeper level. This new awareness helps us to cope with life’s challenges with greater confidence, creativity and effectiveness.
